On a label whose stable includes established post-rock practitioners I Am David Sparkle as well as the emerging talents of Amateur Takes Control, both from Singapore, not much space seems to be available for Malaysia's instrumental quartet Deepset to distinguish themselves from their peers. But anyone who unassumingly dismisses them as 'just another post-rock band' would have a lot to take back, if this debut full-length is anything to go by.
Luxuriously shaped melodies with key delay accompaniments, deep and solid rhythms, and unexpected structural movements will draw the listener into every second of their tracks. The multitude of textures present in every song also breaks any anticipated pattern, going from the subtlety of Mono and Explosions In The Sky to the euphoric energy of 65daysofstatic at the drop of a hat.
With their conscious decision not to repeat any riffs, the band likens the progression of each song to the unfolding of a story, where no scene is re-enacted. And for a genre that has been arguably over-explored, Deepset manages to successfully maintain this fresh edge to their sound.
